The Race
Track: Assiniboia Downs
Race Number: 6
Distance: 5 furlongs
Surface: Dirt
Class: Maiden
Purse: $20k
Age: 3YO
For: MB/SASK/ND/SD bred fillies (I had to look this up, but I think the acronyms stand for Manitoba/Saskatchewan/North Dakota/South Dakota. We’re going to rock with that until someone tells me otherwise.)
Initial thoughts
I don’t know nothin’ about Assiniboia, but based on the dates of prior running lines of the horses that ran last year, it looks like their 2025 live racing season just opened up last week. There are a few first-timers, and a few that have some experience, a very common scenario in maiden races. With the mixture of experience levels and long layoffs for the horses that ran last year, I’m basically clueless on where to go in these races.
The Runners
Based on the morning line odds, there seems to be some separation between a few of the likely favorites and the rest of the field:
- Frankly has come close in three starts but hasn’t gotten the best of trips. Hasn’t ran since September of 2024.
- Twolefttoload is also coming off of a long layoff since September 2024 and has ran at different levels. Today’s race is back at the maiden $20k level and the correct distance for her. Nothing too impressive from the workout stats, so hard to say that 2-1 morning line would be a good value.
- Nikkitysplit is a first-time-starter who looks to be having good workouts and gets a good jockey (+ROI of $2.74). 3-1 looks better here than the lower odds of the first two horses highlighted, but I could see Nikkitysplit being the post time favorite if the public doesn’t mind taking a shot on a newbie.
I was going to comment on the rest of the runners, but they look to be outmatched. Since this is my first attempt at publicly handicapping a race, let’s just try to get the likely favorite, Nikkitysplit, home for the win.
Tune in on your favorite live racing app at 9:40pm Winnepeg time to see what happens! (lol, I’ll be fast asleep and check the replay in the morning). If I have time on these Race of the Day posts, I’ll try to mark up the past performances and add it to the post.
